Regulation of the Competition
(freely extracted from the Lithuanian national regulation)
I. AIMS OF THE CONTEST
A. To encourage pupils to use information and communication technologies intensively in their learning activities.
B. To engage children to take an interest in information and communication technologies, computers, and their application
from the very beginning at school.
C. To reveal pupils the advantages of information and communication technologies and how they can be helpful in learning
various topics.
D. To cultivate pupils’ creativity, information culture, as well as algorithmic and logic thinking.
E. To detect pupils especially skilled in information and communication technology instruments and tools.
F. To help teachers in the planning and the development of the right instruments and strategies for increasing pupils'
knowledge, skills and competences in the use of information and communication technologies.
II. PEOPLE ORGANIZING THE CONTEST
- Italian “Castoro” organizing committee (COC) and its appointed administration committee are in charge of the contest.
Every year the organizing committee schedules organizational terms of the contest, that have to be evaluated and approved
by COC.
School (district) organizers arrange the contest/s in their schools.
- COC appoints the problems preparation group which presents its work to the administration committee. Every year the final
decision on the problems to be submitted to pupils is made by delegated COC members.
- The administration defines technical and technological conditions, requirements for computers to be used, dates of
the contest and training sessions and provides school organizers with this information.
- The results of the contest are gathered and evaluated by the contest administration. COC approves and avertises
them.
III. ORGANIZATIONAL TERMS OF THE CONTEST
- The contest is open to pupils from all compulsory schools and schools that provide compulsory education
interested in information and communication technologies and their use in education. The participants are split into
three groups by age (usually 6-9th, 9-11th and 11-14th and/or belonging to the following classes in Italian schools:
first three years of primary school, last two years of primary school, junior high school).
- The number of participants within each school may be limited considering the number of the computers available in
the school (or made available by other institutions for the contest).
Whether the number of participants exceeds the number of available workstations, schools can organize a pre-selection
of pupils to fulfil the conditions in the above point.
- The contest is being held the same day in all Italian schools.
- COC and contest administration apply attributes and web-site of the contest as well as electronic mail to perform
the contest and to communicate with school (district) organizers.
IV. AWARDS TO CONTEST PARTICIPANTS
- Only individual results of participants in the different age groups according to the separation proposed above
are calculated.
- All participants gain “Castoro” appreciation letters for the attendance in the contest.
- Winners of the separate classes are awarded “Castoro” winners’ diplomas and remembrance gifts.
The number of awards as well as the value and the amount of gifts is set every year by COC.
- Schools which attract the largest numbers of participants as well as the most active school organizers gain the
letters of appreciation and the remembrance gifts.
V. SPONSORSHIP OF THE CONTEST
- Organization and problem preparation of the first contests is sponsored by the Laboratory for Teaching and Learning
Technologies in the Department of Human and Social Sciences in the University of Cassino and other available sponsors. Prizes and awards for the most active schools and school organizers are
given by the sponsors of the contest.
- The contests may also be financed by a participation fee. Every year the fee will be set in an annual meeting
of the COC members.
- Each year a given number of participants could be fee exempt;
single situations of students meriting to be fee exempt, reported by the school organizers,
will be evaluated by the COC and the administration.
